The Challenge

OceanMD’s eReferral solution allows physicians to securely and easily send referrals electronically to specialty services via web-based platform. Although many community-based systems have integrated to OceanMD, Cerner-based health systems receiving referrals through this platform access the referral from the portal and transcribe information from the eReferral form to the receiving system to schedule the appointment. Similarly, appointment details are manually entered in the OceanMD portal to update the referral status in Cerner. The scheduling staff work within two systems, the hospital EMR and OceanMD portal, to keep both up to date.

The Solution

Red Rover has developed a middleware solution, called Core, to integrate OceanMD’s eReferral portal with Oracle Cerner. Core sits between these two applications, enabling transactions by pushing and querying data in alignment with the eReferral workflow. The integration works by automating the process of creating a generic order with discrete data fields mapped from the eReferral form to order detail fields. The aim is to improve the efficiency of OceanMD eReferral management by automating portions of the workflow and reducing the number of manual data entry process steps. In the integrated workflow, the opportunities for automation include; creation of an order per modality, creation of a patient record that does not already exist in the system, discrete data fields populating with referral information during the scheduling process, uploading the eReferral summary and attachments (e.g. lab work) to the patient chart, updating the referral with appointment details (e.g. date and time) after scheduling, and continually updating and completing the referral based on appointment activity.
